Superman Returns

I saw Superman Returns last saturday but I’m a lazy bastard so I’ll write about it now! Spoilers ahead!

I liked it. It’s not on the level of Batman Begins or X2 but still good. The speical effects were amazing. The acting was good, not great but good. Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor was awesome. He does show some Hackman-esk qualities but you have to remember it’s the same character. This is really just Superman III (ignore the real superman three and four, they were horrible anyways). They had lines from the previous movies that I thought was awesome. Pretty much just acknowledgeing that they do exist in this world. Like the line from Superman about flying, how it’s still the safest form of travel.

Now the bad: The plot was a bit lacking. Lex makes a new continent from Krypton tech that he finds in the fortress of solitude. It however will end up killing Billions of people. The kicker is the island is laced with Kryptonite. Seems a bit far fetched and I’m just sick of the “rare” green rock they seem to find in every movie. And Lex did have is over the top lines from the 1970s, which we really didn’t need. Like “Krrrrrrrryptonite!”. Overall I liked it, however.
We did have cases of Superdickery however, here’s what my friends and I gathered:

  • Superman blowing out the lighter that Lois was trying to use.
  • The man skipped out completely on his hospital bill
  • That massive rock he tosses wasn’t really out of the earths gravitational pull yet.
  • Put a new spin on wham bam thank you ma’am (5 FREAKIN YEARS WITHOUT A PHONE CALL OR A “I gotta go for a bit”?)
  • He took the last beef egg roll, leaving Lois with veggie
  • His dog wants to play catch with him, so he tosses it into orbit
  • He catches the daily planet globe and then puts it on some random car
  • He stalked Lois with X-Ray vision and super hearing
  • He left that plane in the middle of a baseball field, it weighs nothing to him he couldn’t drop it off somewhere?
  • Crashing his space ship into his mother’s farm destroying some of the crops for the year

I look forward to the next.
