Why is Superman uninteresting?

Filed under: Comics, HeroicWallpapers — Jim Murphy @ 3:54 pm

Since I started reading comics way back in the 80s I always found Superman to be uninteresting. I wasn’t able to nail it down as to why until his Death/Rebirth. At the time I didn’t quite understand how a man who’s only weakness is space rock was killed buy someone with no space rock on him. Someone informed me that Doomsday and Superman just beat each other to pseudo-death. That’s when it clicked. With Spider-Man a stray bullet that he doesn’t react to in time will kill him. Same goes with Batman or The Flash or Daredevil. That’s what made Superman so boring to me.

This article explains in depth why “Superman sucks”. But it also goes on to say that he can never be interesting. I’d like to disagree but I’m finding it hard to find an agreement. Towards the end he says

Superman represents hope and indefatigable strength, and any attempt to complicate these issues would no longer make him Superman. By definition, Superman has to be boring and morally absolute because if he isn’t, he ain’t Superman.

Which I can agree with. But why not have a story where he has to decide if he should stop a village from being swallowed by an earthquake or stopping a small child from being murdered. One of those events would happen and he has to deal with decision he made. (I believe this scenario was played out in Captain Marvel, but it made a nice example).

I guess having a flawed Superman would be like having your hopes dashed every month.

Stan Lee Tribute

There was a tribute to Stan Lee called “Under The Influence: A Tribute To Stan Lee in Los Angeles”. As long as my super-awesome detective don’t fail me I believe it was held in Los Angeles.  CBR was in attendance and you can see the artwork from the tribute at this blog. Enjoy!

Wow. August 2007 was my last post? Really? I’m a mega slacker.

Anyway this one will deal with the Spider-Man story Brand New/One More Day. So if you haven’t read it yet or are waiting for the trades or something STOP! Hammertime… or spoilers lie ahead.

Supreme Power should be a movie

Filed under: Comics, HeroicWallpapers — Jim Murphy @ 11:25 am

I love the Squadron Supreme crew that J. Michael Straczynski recently retold. It’s basically Marvel’s retelling of the DC universe with a twist. A little background info might be needed. (more…)

Dr Strange’s Sanctum in 3-D

Filed under: Comics — Jim Murphy @ 11:46 am

I thought this was kind of cool. Joe Quesada posted this video on his Marvel Blog. It’s Dr. Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum in 3-D.

Captain America and the Replacements

Filed under: Comics, HeroicWallpapers — Jim Murphy @ 10:02 am

Finally got a hold of Captain America #25. What I hate about these issues that the media reports on is that in 3 years it’ll barely be worth the cover price. But until then it’ll cost you $20 bucks. I don’t collect comics so I can put my kids into college, I just like the escape. Needless to say I had no problem waiting for the 2nd printing to read about Cap’s death. Ok back on topic (more…)

300: Movie VS. Comic

Filed under: Comics, HeroicWallpapers, Movie Reviews, Movies — Jim Murphy @ 2:15 pm

I saw 300 over the weekend. If you haven’t seen the 300 movie yet or read the comic you may want to stop reading now. I actually got the chance to read the comic before I went to go see it. I wasn’t really impressed with the comic. The art was confusing and flat. And in the comic the King was kind of a dick. And by kind of I mean super. But in the movie they made him into a nicer killing machine… if that makes sense. (more…)

Comic Numbering

Filed under: Comics, HeroicWallpapers — Jim Murphy @ 10:24 am

I never really understood re-numbering of comics. And this post by Marvel’s Tom Brevoort made me see both sides of re-numbering. I don’t agree with re-numbering as a marketing ploy but I could understand re-numbering to kick off a new story arc. Then new readers won’t see Issue #506 and think they need to read 505 other issues. I do think the best of both worlds would be two numbers. One for the story arc and one for the collector. It’d be hard as a collect to look for issue 6 when there’s been 15 of them. Maybe it wouldn’t be took hard if they put the story arc name on it. Then you’d just need issue 6 of the Neverland story arc or whatever it’s called. They could put the “collector number” somewhere small so not to confuse the new readers. Maybe include it as the first number of the bar code or something. Just so we can say “I’d like to get issue 350 of X-men” and not “I’d like to get issue 4 of the Highway storyarc for X-men”, it’s not that it’s harder to say I just think it would be easier for everyone. Then they could still post “500th Issue!” badges on issue milestones.

Avenger Down?

Filed under: Comics, HeroicWallpapers — Jim Murphy @ 1:09 pm

This contains Civil War Spoilers, so stop reading if you don’t want to know.

Unless you’ve been on some kind media boycott you probably know by now that Captain America is dead. I mean it’s been on Fox News, almost every website I’ve been to has an article about it. Hell even Colbert had his Word linked to Captain America’s death last night.
