Athlete Blogs

Filed under: Sports — Jim Murphy @ 9:02 am

Athletes seem to be getting on the blog band wagon. For example Curt Shilling (Red Sox Pitcher for those not in the know) got on the blog train. It’s a real blog, not like the Drew Bledsoe Blog I posted about a few months back. Shilling was talking about it on the radio, so unless WEEI got a fantastic voice impersonator, I’ll believe it.

Curt’s not the first or last athlete to open a blog. A quick search pulls up an official blog for Carson Palmer (QB for the Bengals). I think it’s a good idea. Curt Shilling for example is doing Q&A sessions right from his fans. It’s a simple way to keep in contact with their fans, and from the comments they seem to love it.

Shilling also commented on another bonus from the blog. A few days ago he wrote something about his contract situation, and just yesterday the Boston Herald had an article about his contract with quotes right from the blog. No reporter had to contact Shilling and ask him about the contract, it was already public. This might be a great idea for athletes who don’t want to talk to the media but keep the fans happy. The people on WEEI were joking about Manny Ramirez starting a blog, mostly because he doesn’t seem to care about anything really, but if he did want to reach out to his fans this would be the perfect vehicle for him or someone like him. We sports fans would appreciate it.
